Australia #6: Magnetic Island

Highlights

From Airlie Beach, the point where the Whitsunday Island cruise had started, we continued the tour with the Greyhound to Magnetic Island, which is reachable from Townsville via the ferry. On the island, Julia and me rented a so-called "moke" car and cruised around the small island. After some relaxing days on that island, the tour continued to its northern end, Cairns.

Australia #5: Sailing the Whitsundays

Highlights

The Whitsunday Islands are a well known group of islands on the middle east coast of Australia, known also for its long white beaches. We did a sailing trip on a catamaran for three days, sleeping two nights on South Molle Island. Like on the Fraser Island trip before, we were again lucky with the weather: the days before and the days after our trip wasn't good weather, but right when we were on sea, it was. I got heavily sunburned:(

Collection: Australia #4: Fraser Island

Fraser Island (Satellite map) is one of the major touristic attractions on the whole east coast of Australia. We had booked a trip with Koala to go on a three-day 4-wd trip on our own.

Albums

Welcome to Fraser!

The day began at 5am to get all of the jeeps packed with the camping stuff. Starting in Hervey Bay, we drove to the Bagde harbour and set over to the Island with a Ferry. The first stop was Central Station, in the middle of the island. After that we drove to Lake McKenzie which is a beautiful lake with mostly pure silica beach and blue to purple water. From the inland we continued to the beach searching for a place to camp around 3pm, as the tide went from high to low and we were no longer able to drive on the beach.

Indian Head

The next morning, after packing the tents into the Jeep again, we set off in north direction driving along to the most northern point of our track, all the way along the east beach. The destination was Indian Head which is a viewing point onto the sea, where one often can spot some sharks, turtles and in some seasons even whales. We spotted a black dot in the sea which was probably a diving turtle:)

Wreck of the S.S. Maheno

From Indian Head we took the south direction on the beach and drove some hours to Catholic Beach, the area where the wreck of the S.S. Maheno is located. The ship went on ground in a strong cyclone in 1935 and since then is rusting giving the wreck a red, rusty look.

Returning from the Island

Continuing in south direction, we eventually entered a inland road which lead us to Lake Birrabeen where we chose the camp that night. The lake is known for its reddish, orange tea colored water. The next day Julia and me had to leave early to visit a doctor as Julia's cold has been getting worse and worse on the Island. Of course, the next day was public holiday, so we even had to go to the next hospital.

Australia #3: Australia Zoo

Highlights

After some days in Byron Bay, Julia and me proceeded travelling in north direction, passing Brisbane and Surfers Paradise, all the time along Australia's Sunshine Coast. As we had planned to visit the Australia Zoo, we chose Noosa as the journey's target as the Zoo offered a free bus pickup from there, saving us some money for a train ticket. We saw Harriet, the former World's oldest known creature, who died at an age of 175 years, several weeks after we visited her.

Australia #2: Surfing in Byron Bay

Highlights

From Sydney we travelled to Byron Bay using a 15-hour nightbus. Byron Bay is located only two hours from Brisbane, the next big city on the way up the east coast. We had received various recommendations to stay at the Arts Factory Backpackers Lodge, so we did. Eventually I participated in a surfing lession which was quite fun. Unfortunately I never found opportunity to go surfing again.
