Autumn vacation

Highlights

Like the years before, my family together with some friends spent their autumn vacation in a village in Bavaria. As I had some days of vacation left for this year, I joined them for half a week.

A visit to the Wildparkstadion

Highlights

Today, I visited a german second league football game between Karlsruher SC and MSV Duisburg together with several friends. As the game started at 2pm, I took the walk from my place to the stadium at half past 12 which took around 20 to 30 minutes. The game was pretty interesting, with the guests first scoring and taking the lead, then being equalized and the local team gain the lead until 3:1. The guests - one of last years first league relegated teams (and as such one favorite for winning the league) - then put up some pressure and got the upper hand in the game, equalizing the lead in the game's last minute. As result, Karlsruhe still leads the league after 4 games, with Duisburg placed 2nd with the same amount of points and scored goals, but more goals against them.

The "Bundesgerichtshof"

Highlights

The Bundesgerichtshof (= Federal Court of Justice of Germany) is the highest appeals court in Germany for cases of civil and criminal law. Together with the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany (Bundesverfassungsgericht), it is located in Karlsruhe, the city I live in. In fact, I am currently living on the opposite side of the street from the Bundesgerichtshof and last Sunday when I had decided to go to have breakfast on that sunny day, I found its doors open for visitors as I passed the gates, so I came back after breakfast and took some pictures.

Collection: Australia #8: Alice Spring & Outback

Series #8 contains pictures from Central Australia, the red center or Outback. After 4 weeks on the east coast, these pictures differ greatly from the ones before as the landscape in the red center is ... well, red:) Though Julia and me were there for almost one week, at least half of the time, we were "on the road" and camping in the freezing cold Outback.

From Alice Springs to Kings Canyon

After deboarding the flight with Quantas at Alice Springs Airport, I checked into the Annie's Place Backpackers and took a walk around in Alice Springs. The next days, we took a tour with Mulgas Rock Tour with the first stop (after several hours driving) was at the Kings Canyon.

At the Olgas

The Olgas are a group of rocks around 25 km from Ayers Rock. Though Ayers Rock and the Olgas both look as if they were made from the same material, as both are red and washed out from the rain, they're not. We walked them in a two-hour foot hike.

Sunset at Uluru

From the Olgas, the tour continued some kilometers over to Ayers Rock where we discovered that the mountain climb was open that day (it is closed due to the weather conditions around 200 days a year), so some of us took the climb (you may look forward to see Julias pictures from above there!) while the rest drove over the the Aboriginal museum and then returned to pick up the climbers. Half an hour before sunset we positioned ourselves at the bus-viewpoint for the sunset. After sunset, dinner was ready:)

From Ayers Rock to Alice Springs

The next morning, we got up at around 4am, unable to sleep any more and fed our fire so we would get warm. At 5.45 everyone had to get up because watching the sunrise at the rock was on the plate and we had to get one hour driving ahead of us. At Uluru, we had perfect visual conditions, however, it was really really cold, so operating the camera was pain. After sunrise and breakfast everyone took the trip around Uluru which takes about two hours and is 8 km long. We stopped at a small camel riding place on the way back to Alice and were back in the hostel at 5pm, having a hot shower. In the evening, we took Annies tour around Alice with included sunset-beer for 2$ and I had to say goodbye to Australia as my flights going back home would take offthe next day.

Australia #7: Cairns

Highlights

After around 4 weeks, the northern end of the east coast trip has been reached: Cairns. We arrived with the Greyhound and stayed in Cairns for several days. Cairns itself isn't that big, so there wasn't a lot you could do apart from going on a dive to the Great Barrier Reef - which we did. Apart from that we didn't do a lot until Julia left to Darwin and some days later I flew to Alice Springs. I watched the opening game from the FIFA World Cup 2006 Germany, at night starting at 2.00am.
